Immediately racing to the fallen commander's side, Private First Class Aguirre did all he could for the officer before removing him to the rear for medical evacuation. When two platoons of Private First Class Aguirre's company came under fire from a well entrenched enemy force, several casualties were suffered, including the company commander. Private First Class Aguirre distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 2 July 1967, while serving as a Medical Aidman attached to Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during combat operations near Tuy An, Republic of Vietnam.
